MAMTA: Desire of a Transgender to attain motherhood!

Award winning film maker Sandeep Malani has made lots of films on social issues and has won awards and applauds at various film festivals in Indian and International platform. While his films are based on HIV Aids, Woman empowerment and Child trafficking, he has also made films on the LGBT community and has got rave response for his bold but beautiful subjects.

And not only his short films are focused on such themes, but his commercial feature films too have a character from the community portraying either a gay or a transgender with positivism and been part of the entertainment section. Neither has any character been degraded or shown in poor light.

While SMS 6260 had a transgender providing relief at the call center, she was everyone's favorite Julie Darling; In Janleva 555, there was a make up gay man who was also a darling to the crew on film and on sets.  Shaayad was about a gay man and a model girl living together as best friends and she finds his importance in his life to be caring and helpful than her actual lover. This was a sensitive film that got awards and applauds at various film festivals.

Getting back to the latest, MAMTA (Maternal Love) is a chapter from the film Maa – Yeh CineMaa Hai, is now a full fledged short film in itself. The film talks about the desire of a Trans woman who is a dancer and wants to give education and a name in the society for her three daughters, who she has adopted. She tells her problems she faced during her childhood and does not wish that her daughters face the same. She needs equal rights to them who were orphan, but she took the responsibility to take care of their livelihood.
Sharanya (playing Deepika) is  a dancer who gets trained from Kshama (Sudhaji, a classical well known dancer). Ranveer (Mahendra Pandey) is Deepika’s fiancée and his friend Varun (Ranjeet Jha) visit the dance class, wherein Sudhaji tells her desire and also bless everyone with good health and prosperity.

This sentimental scene is a short film sequence been scripted, conceptualized and directed by Sandeep Malani, besides handling the camera (using iPhone 6s).  The music has been composed by Punith M Ranganathan. Edited by Vignesh Thanupillai for The Studio Agency, it has background score also by Prajoth Dsa.

The film opens with a small introduction to the character of a Transgender in Hindi films, and the film ends with the character at the dubbing studio sharing her experience of working in the film.

Kshama has worked earlier for a Hindi film titled Beyond – The Third Kind, directed by Shiraz Henry who recommended Kshama for Mamta. Malani and Shiraz are good friends and have worked together in various projects, directed by Henry wherein Malani has acted.

Showers of Blessings for Malani’s iPhone Cine-Maa

Writer director Sandeep Malani’s latest offering, Maa – yeh Cinemaa Hai, shot entirely on an iPhone camera has many tracks of different genres. There are love songs, romantic songs, birthday songs, party songs, club song, fun song, flamenco, classical, xmas party, celebration etc. And one such track which is different from the rest is the Musical Instrumental of the church choir, ‘There Shall be showers of Blessings’. The musical track is composed by Prajoth Dsa and is used in bits and pieces in the film.

‘The track, a famous church choir since ages has been my personal favorite and I always wanted to have it used as a background score for a sequence in my film. It was while my visit to Sagar Church in Shimoga, that during my stay there for 3 days I happened to hear a wonderful composition of the same by Bro Sunil Fernandes who played it so beautifully in the church during the mass. I decided there and then that I would use the same composition and track for my film Maa, which the shoot was then under production’ recalls Malani.

I then requested Sunil Bro to compose the same feel which was heavenly. He did try to do so, and was about to record the same at a recording studio for me in the days to come in Bangalore. Due to the timings and schedules it got postponed for a while, but he did promise me that when he gets time, he would do.

Unfortunately, the fate desired something else. Brother Sunil Fernandes committed suicide and that was a tragic incident that happened.
The mystery behind his death remained unsolved…..

To his memory and tribute, I then requested Prajoth Dsa, the singer composer who already had done the title track for Maa – to recreate ‘Showers Of Blessings’ for me in a different musical mood and to be very high on instrumental that goes with the mood of the film. And Prajoth Dsa came out with a wonderful composition. This beautiful piece of music is a tribute to Late Bro. Sunil Fernandes.

The track that also begins with the opening of the film, that Mohammed Aashiq interviews me in Daijiworld Studio and asks for the narration of the film, this piece begins and as the journey goes on, all the footage montages of the film is showcased for this instrumental music.

Prayers and Honors to the Heavens by Sundeep Malani for Yeh CineMaa Hai

Anything you start, first take the name of the Lord. That’s the usual practice which everyone does and so also it has been at the movies – while on shoot (we do the auspicious Muhurath and Pooja’s) and while the film is complete, there is a completion ritual. And when the film is released, there too an auspicious event. But these days, the corporate world has taken over and the Spiritual and Religious sentiments have vanished. The film begins directly with no acknowledging Thanks and prayers to Lord’ but Thanks to the partners and the brands associated with the film. But that has not been the case of Sandeep Malani’s films. Be it from earlier days (few years ago of film making style) to even today, as the film is an iPhone film – equivalent to today’s method of making, yet – the film opens up with the Praise to the Lord. That being, Yeh CineMaa Hai.

Praise The Lord
The opening of the film series itself (the video) is the beautiful ‘Our Lady of Miracles’ Church aka Milages in Mangalore, the interior with the statue of Mother Mary and the Konkani song ‘Moriye Krista Maaye’ being played in the backdrop. This is been taken forward by
the Huge Ganesha idol and the inside of the Banaswadi Temple with the Kannada devotional song ‘Gajamukane Ganapathiye Nimage Vandane’. And the Islamic prayer, the Fajr (Salat) picturised at the Cox Town ‘Hajee Sir Ismail Sait Masjid’ followed by the ‘Ek Onkar Satnam’ Prayer picturised at the ‘Guru Singh Sabha Gurudwara’ center at Ulsoor, Bangalore.

Remembering the Departed Souls
‘I am the resurrection and the life, whoever  believes in me will never die’ with a musical chorus echoing for the photos of the departed in the family – Ramesh Malani, Grace Molly Cutinha, Veronica, Julius Sequeira and Celine Sequeira; followed by a tribute note to director Krishnan Subaash and everyone’s inspiration Sreedevi.  The little short video of flower bouquet being taken from the Sridevi magazine is heart touching. The music piece is composed by Ameya Naik.

The Sequences of the Almighty
There have been many sequences in the film that is not forced but goes with the flow and the requirement of the script. All the scenes are related to each other.

The first of it is the Jaagran (Prayer) that features Poonam, Ritesh and Tusshar doing the Krishna Bajan.

The next video is of the St Antony Idol at Jeppoo followed by the Kulshekar Church with the beautiful garden of the Old Testament and the Vailankanni Grotto and Mother Teresa idol that is been honored by the artists Sonam, Deepika, Varun and Ranveer. The musical score is by Karthik Venkatesh.

A musical on the Christmas eve with that of greeting and wishing at the St Vincent Pallotti Church, Banaswadi Bangalore features Sonali and family friends. The video also has the glittering stars sparkles in the sky, the beautifully decorated Xmas tree and the little crib; thus giving the happiness of the Christmas feel ‘Allelluia’ with the church bells rendered by Nitin Acharya.

A musical piece of the title track of Yeh Cinemaa Hai by Prajoth Dsa pans from the Gautama Buddha little idol to Sidharth who just wakes up from his trance period wondering where is he located.
Prayers in Silence with peace is the video featuring Sr Helen at the Bethany Convent at Attavar, Mangalore.

The last two sequences of this video being the highlight –
Jaya Maa kneeling and praying silently for the safety and well being of her son at the Grotto of Mother Mary, picturised at the ‘Infant Jesus Shrine’ in Mangalore. The hymn playing in the background is ‘Namo Yeh Meri Maa’ sung by Deepa Narayan Jha for composer Jayant Aryann.
.. And it is been continued by the mind prayer of Karan in Tamil asking for all the intentions of Jaya Amma to come true; bowing to ‘Shirdi Sai Baba’ Statue at the HSR Kalyan Nagar temple in Bangalore.

The Cast and the crew
The collage of the musical prayer videos features Reshmi Mirchandi, Thadani, Hemdev, Kkewal Sharma, Prayas Singh, Shubha Raksha, Sharanya Kaur, Ranjeet Jha, Mahendra Pandey, Reshma Malani, Marina Roopa, Asha Fernades, Roseline Sequeira, Christopher Vijayanand, Isabelle, Sharon David, Bharath Lakshmikanth, Sarojini Shetty, Juliet Savio Aranha, Sheetal Malani, Meena Malani and Velu Murugan.
The musical scores by Jayant Aryan, Prajot Dsa, Nitin Acharya, Karthik Venkatesh, Ameya Naik, Puneet Ranganathan. Edit by Vignesh Thanupillai, Coproduced by Santosh Chawla, Ranjeet Jha, Edward Dsouza for The Studio Agency, RKJ Productions and Malani Talkies, it is been scripted, conceptualized, iPhone camera and directed by Sundeep Malani.

Fashionista with Attitude and Woman Power in Yeh Cinemaa Hai

‘Fashion is about something that comes within you’. Rightly said as this quote applies to the T to Sandeep Malani’s style of presenting it in most of his films and herewith with his latest entertainer on mother sentiment and woman empowerment shot on an iPhone titled ‘Yeh Cinemaa Hai’

Fashion’ in Malani’s Films
Sandeep Malani, started his career in early 90s as a Dancer on stage followed by Theatre Artist and moved to act in films. Simultaneously his first shot facing the camera was that of a Local brand Jeans Advertisement. That’s where the Style and Fashion was born. Later as years went by, he organized various shows those include Dance competitions, Talent Hunts and Fashion Events. Not to forget he was the Jury for many Fashion Shows and also has walked the ramp for a few as a Celebrity.  And when it came to his films, he has presented his heroines always as a Fashionista – Stylish and with elite and dignity. Also a scene, sequence or their presentation in outfits have been stylish. Most of the characters also played importance that of a Model, Make up Man, Fashion Designer. Few examples being Janu as the Model in Miss California, as a Stylish Diva in SMS 6260, Jenica Kalra and Vikramjith, the lead players as Fashion Icons and Model Coordinators in Shaayad, Kalpana Pandit as an TV anchor and Ranjeet Jha as Make up man in Janleva 555 while lot of Page 3 personalities in Yeh Cinemaa Hai.

Fashionista in Yeh Cinemaa Hai
‘Style is a way to say who you are, without having to speak’ is what Sonam is all about.
Sonam, a fashion designer student who has this project of having her designs to be presented for a Grand Fashion Show. She with her colleagues do a Run through before the finale to see that everything is perfect. She is very much dedicated while comes to her profession. Her colleague, Sushant is a flirt, who tries to seduce and woo her. He does this in open on stage, but being very professional she does not react to his moves and completes the performance showing her attitude of the walk, style, posture. And as the practice is over, she gives him a piece of insulting advice stating that – she is not a kind of woman to fall into his prey. She is a committed girl to work and to her love. It does not mean that if you are in this profession, you can hang around with anyone you want. It’s your passion for work and not your fashion to have pleasure.

The Cast and the Crew
Shubha Raksha plays Sonam while Trillok Shroff plays Sushant. The other models include Shipra Rajput, Heena Durgapur, Shridevi BU, Mohammed Hashim and Syed Sad. The scene was shot as part of Model Hunt 2017 workshop for ARN Model Agency. Rony Prasad is the Man behind the event.
Edit by Santosh Chawla and Vignesh Thanupillai, music by Punith Ranganathan and Nitin Acharya, it is co-produced for RKJ Productions, The Studio Agency by Ranjeet Jha, Santosh Chawla, Edward Dsouza and Malani Talkies. Concept, Screenplay, Iphone and direction by Sundeep Malani

Friendship Day celebration by the trio Bromance in Malani’s Yeh Cinemaa Hai

Hindi film industry also known as Bollywood has always from the years had Bromance in movies and were all super duper hits. The few examples being Jai and Veeru (Amitabh and Dharmendra) in Sholay, Dharmendra and Jeetendra in Dharam Veer to Aamir Khan and Salman Khan in Andaz Apna Apna and in recent years Arjun Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in Gunday; Sidharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan in Student Of the year and so on. Their on screen chemistry is off screen too at various parties, events and award ceremonies. Sandeep Malani also brings Bromance between few characters in his latest iPhone offering, Yeh CineMaa Hai.

What is Bromance?
Bro-mance is not romance between Brothers. But a brotherly romance between two friends who are like soul mates and their relationship does not have any sexual act. They are not homosexuals, but are always together and can be for support, help, kind and in need at all times. One can easily rely on their friendship at any given point of time. They are for good!

Bromance in Yeh Cinemaa Hai
Bromance has always been a part of Malani’s earlier films be it SMS 6260 between Diganth and Kiran, Badri and Danny and so in Who 5 Din between Pius Anand, Akash Hora, Anant Joshi and Mann Hora. And so in Janleva 555 between Anant Joshi, Ranjeet Jha and Mann Hora.
In Yeh Cinemaa Hai, the friendly relationship continues with Varun and Ranveer (played by Ranjeet Jha and Mahendra Pandey) and so with Sidharth and his twin friends Tusshar and Ritesh (played by Bharath Lakshmikanth, Kkewal Vyas and Prayas Singh). As Varun and Sidharth are cousin brothers, their relationship is not Bromance. It’s actual Brothers!

The Concept
Sidharth, Tusshar and Ritesh are always hanging out together at Page 3 parties, Discotheques, pubs and events. And the occasion here is Friendship Day. They meet at Infinity Mall and have a good time laughing and talking, sharing some jokes and hey celebrate by dancing to a live music in the mall, that of the singer Mathew singing ‘Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, Sanam Teri Kasam’ and during the same time, Alia calls Sidharth to find his whereabouts, that’s when she hangs the phone knowing that he is with his friends, whom she hates the most. Sadly, Sidharth is in dilemma as to don’t know what to do.  Celebrate his friendship day or get back to his lady love, who he loves the most.

The Song
‘Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam, Sanam Teri Kasam’ is a popular retro song from the film Sanam Teri Kasam originally sung by Kishore Kumar and music by RD Burman. The film starred Kamal Hassan and Reena Roy. This super hit song was a romantic song. Here, the cover version of the same (more like a Karaoke) sung on stage with an echo feel by Mathews is changed to a Friendship song; as the line that goes, yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam….  And at a time when Alia calls up Sidharth and she hangs the phone, in the backdrop we can hear the line: Kitna Tadpayegi Mujko, Uthna hi tadpegi Tu bi…. (and this actually happens later part of the film)

The Making of the Song
It was shot at Infinity Mall, Andheri and that day being a Friendship day, the mall was full and we had the few of the artists along with us besides the three – Bharath, Kkewal and Prayas – Jagruti, Mahendra , Sharanya and Ranjeet also was with us at the shoot. And while I actually wanted the trio artists to be free enough to laugh out loud and enjoy, they were all conscious about the crowd. And I had to actually shout out loud giving them the orders – Just do as I say. It was more of an actual test for them to dance. As Mathews was singing at the center of the stage and everyone there were just standing and watching, I forced and pushed the trio to dance. They were hesitant, but my angry face towards them, they had to do with no other option. And guess what, they actually did it with perfection as the others watching too joined them.
Says Kkewal (the character name Ritesh and who is also known as Karan Sharma): "Still get goosebumps when I think of dancing in middle of the mall and when you are surrounded with onlookers the entire credit goes to our director Sundeep Malani who believe in me and push me ahead it was an overwhelming experience when u are gathered by lot of people in mall making of maa will always be special"

The Cast and the crew

The song is featured on Bharath Lakshmikanth (Sidharth), Kkewal Vyas (Ritesh), Prayas Singh (Tusshar),Mathews (Singer) and Sanjukta Ghosh (Alia, on the phone). The song is sung by Mathews with programming by Punith M Ranganathan. Edit by Santosh Chawla and Vignesh Thanupillai, it is co-produced by RKJ Productions (Ranjeet Jha), Edward Dsouza, Santosh Chawla (The Studio Agency) and Malani Talkies.
Concept, screenplay, iphone and direction by Sundeep Malani
